Aticcelerator Ii On The Fly Overclocking For Mac

I have a late 2006 20' 2.16 imac. This mac is notorious for having an ATY RadeonX1600 GPU malfunctioning problem because of heat issues. My GPU began to have these problems a year ago, I installed SMCfanControl and increased the fan speeds the the max. This fixed the problem for the most part, the computer runs everything fine except games and High Quality videos.
My Question: Would running ATIccelerator II (or any other program to control clock speeds) to underclock the GPU result in noticeable temperature reduction? At the moment my imac begins crashing when the GPU temp reaches around 50c. It usually remains around 35-40c unless I am using a graphic intensive program. If I do use one of these, the temp shoots up to around 50c almost instantaneously and the imac crashes. Also, would increasing RAM potentially help this GPU overheating issue?
If anyone has used ATIccelerator II before could you explain the layout, interface, and how I should go about attempting to underclock this awful GPU
