What software are you using? I usually use mumble's setup when testing my mic volume and adjusting things since it shows where your mic level is. It might be where you have it pinned, the mic is very directional and if it isn't in the right spot, you won't get good levels. Try going into a tool or setup area where you can see the volume level of your microphone and talking directly into it (by holding it to your mouth). If that still shows really low, then check your soundcard drivers again and see if there are any settings that you could have missed.
